Nursing

As a nurse in a ward, I have to evaluate and think on my feet to assess the needs of an individual in the light of policies, procedures and time limitations, all whilst retaining that perfect sense of being cool, calm and collected which trust needs. In a hospice, I meet someone for the first time with an open heart and mind and seek to understand and appreciate their story. Like any design process, I learn from what has and hasn’t worked for them and collaborate with others to help the patients successfully live their days with a good quality of life. You have to be optimistic and take ownership of your patients. Death and dying bring ambiguity and everyone dies differently.

My nursing experience is from general surgical/medical wards as well as specialising in dermatology and palliative care. The link to the right is a video taken at Caritas Christi in Melbourne, Australia.  I urge you to watch it to gather an understanding of the nursing that I did as it isn't your typical nursing. I can tell you the story of every single person in this video as I was working the shift after this was filmed. Palliative care is more than just caring for someone who is dying in your typical nursing style. Caring needs creativity and empathy. I see design a lot like I see a palliative patient, it’s a vulnerable client hoping that you can help dream and create a solution which they cant.

Un Youth Australia

When I finished my first year of nursing, after a lengthy interview process, I was one of the top three candidates for UN Youth Ambassador for Australia. One of my main objectives was to create an interactive campaign for the youth of Australia utilising technology that celebrates what people are already doing and create networking opportunities to link remote communities. My catchphrase was 'Building a Healthy Australia.'

I was invited to participate in a Hack-A-Thon based on my business and healthcare experience. Here is the result.

Take, for instance, Dana’s story, which you’ve just heard. After sharing her story, she has had the joy of being connected with schools, dyslexics and most importantly teachers to help educate in a knowledge gap. Take also, for instance, the Australian Patients Association which recently held its inaugural awards and in awarding the prize for innovation to the Gippsland Hospital, called out the massive impact that their use of patient stories has had on supporting those in care. Dana can step in with the background. Each of us can step in to say why we backed the idea and then made it our own too.

Dyslexia Book

Often it is appreciated as a health care professional to receive a book about who your patient is/was before they ended up in your care. In palliative care especially this is always a nice touch. Educating with Critical Agendas this was the book that I would give to tell my story.
